Why indexing is harder, and more important, than ever

A snapshot of where indexing and search stand in 2026, and why staying on top of it matters more than ever.

The numbers (2026)

  • Indexing is no longer automatic. In a 2026 study of 1.7 million pages, 88% of the pages that weren’t indexed were held back by quality issues, not technical glitches (Indexing Insight).

  • Roughly 62% of pages are never indexed at all, and over 20% of indexed pages eventually get deindexed (IndexCheckr).

  • Google’s March 2026 core update, targeting “scaled content abuse,” hit hard, affected sites lost 60–90% of organic visibility within 72 hours.

  • AI Overviews now appear on around 25% of Google searches, nearly double the ~13% seen in early 2025 (Conductor); some trackers put it closer to 48–50%.

  • 58% of US adults say they’ve seen an AI summary in Google results (Pew).

  • When an AI Overview shows, organic click-through rates drop sharply, one study measured a 61% fall, from 1.76% to 0.61% (Seer).

The takeaway: getting indexed is harder, staying indexed isn’t guaranteed, and AI answers are taking clicks that used to reach your pages. Being in the index, and staying there, is the price of entry for both classic search and AI.
